*Bush icon becomes NT Administrator*
ABC News
Tuesday November 18, 2003
The first administrator to be chosen by a Labor government in the
Northern Territory has been sworn into office at a ceremony at
Parliament House.
Ted Egan, a renowned author, singer and songwriter and Australian bush
icon, has sworn his allegiance to the Queen and the Office of
Administrator in front of about 200 people.
The Governor-General, Major General Michael Jeffery, officially signed
Mr Egan's oath.
He described Mr Egan as well qualified to carry out the role.
Mr Egan says he aims to travel and meet people throughout the
Territory, including remote areas.
He says he has always been captivated by Territorians since he and a
friend arrived as 18-year-olds more than 50 years ago.
"We were immediately accepted into a remarkable egalitarian
society, where one was judged not on the basis of race, wealth, skin
colour, religion or culture, but on the relative worth of the
individual," he said.
"May it ever remain thus."
Northern Territory Chief Minister Clare Martin is hosting a reception
for guests in the great hall this afternoon.
She says Mr Egan is a man of the people, who will promote the interests
of Territorians.
"We talk about 'true Territorians' and I think very much Ted Egan
is one of those. He is really a Territorian," he said.
"He's worked all over the Territory, he's advocated over his years
for issues to do with the Territory and [he] certainly combines that
seriousness about where we're going and [what] kind of people we are
with a great sense of humour."
The 71-year-old Mr Egan replaces John Anictomatis.
