Iraq accepts UN resolution
ABC News
Thursday November 14, 2002
Iraq has announced it will unconditionally accept the UN Security
Council resolution demanding its disarmament.
The resolution was adopted unanimously by the Security Council last
week, giving the Iraqi Government seven days to accept its terms.
Today's announcement comes after the Iraqi Parliament voted unanimously
to reject the resolution.
However, the Parliament left the last word to President Saddam Hussein.
Iraq's ambassador to the UN, Mohammed al-Douri, now says the Government
has chosen to avoid the threat of war.
"We choose always the peaceful ways and means," he said
"This is a part of our policy, to protect our country, to protect our
nation, to protect the region from the threat of war, which is real."
Adelaide Institute comment: Under UN Resolution 1441, Australian Dr Bill Jolley will lead the advanced weapons inspectors team.
US President Bush says zero tolerance operates and he'll not accept deception, denial and deceit. Does this mean he has to commit voluntary euthanasia?
And, oil shares fell sharply at the news that Iraq had complied with UN Resolution 1441. Now, that's funny! Surely, there is now a story in this for some fearless journalist to pursue. Don't hold your breath, though.
