Nazi fanatics killing off Hitler's special beetle

A blind beetle named after Adolf Hitler is under threat of extinction because of the demand for it within neo-Nazi circles, insect experts say.
Anophtalmus hitleri, or "eyeless Hitler", is being hunted in large numbers in its natural habitat in a single cave in Slovenia and specimens are selling for as much as £680, National Geographic Deutschland reported.
Martin Bähr, an entomologist at the Zoological State Collection in Munich, said: "There has been a run on these creatures. Collectors are scouring their natural habitat for them. Almost all of our specimens at the museum have been stolen."
The beetle was named by Oscar Scheibel, a Zagreb entomologist and Nazi supporter who discovered it in the 1930s.

Teenager defies crucifix ban

A Melbourne teenager banned from wearing a crucifix to school returned to class today still sporting the necklace, in defiance of school rules.
Jamie Derman, 17, says teachers at Sunbury Downs Secondary College threatened her with suspension if she failed to remove the cross.
Her father Gordon brokered a deal with the school's vice-principal today, enabling Jamie to wear the cross with a letter of permission until a meeting with the principal on Wednesday.
"She is at school and she's wearing the cross, I've got to meet with the principal some time on Wednesday," Mr Derman told Southern Cross Broadcasting.
Jamie says the cross has sentimental value because it replaced a lost baptism gift, and she is refusing to bow to school rules.
"Because I have to cover it up, it's like they're saying to me I have to cover up what I believe in," Jamie told Sky News today.
The college banned the cross under its rules on jewellery and dress.
Mr Derman said the school has always had a dress code, but it was only now being enforced by a new principal.
"I bought her the cross at York Minster basically as a replacement while we were on holidays in England and she's worn it ever since," Mr Derman told Southern Cross Broadcasting.
"When you've got 16, 17, 18 year-olds - they're not kids they're young women - and they're not even allowed to wear a piece of jewellery."
Mr Derman said moving schools was not an option and he hoped the matter could be resolved amicably.
"If not, I don't really know which way I've got to go after that, whether I've got to go for discrimination or what."
Principal Brett Moore defended the dress code, saying it had strong backing.
"Ninety-nine-point-nine per cent of the students and parent community are in support," he told Sky News.

ZAGREB—The Croatian federation expects to be punished by the sport’s ruling bodies after a group of about 200 fans formed a human swastika and gave Nazi salutes during the international friendly against Italy in Livorno on Wednesday.
"There is no doubt, FIFA and UEFA will take action," federation spokesman Zoran Cvrk said Friday. "It is terrible. Every form of racism, fascism or other, deserves the severest condemnation."
About 200 supporters arranged themselves into the Nazi symbol about 30 minutes into Croatia's 2-0 win at Livorno's Armando Picchi stadium. Many also gave Nazi salutes. Police eventually moved in, forcing the fans to stop.
Livorno is known as a politically left-wing town and the Croatia fans claim to have been incited by the jeering of their national anthem and waving of flags of the old communist Yugoslavia. Croatia fought a bloody war for independence from the old federation in 1991-95.
Croatian police are trying to identify the offenders and the soccer federation has appealed to leaders of local fan clubs to distance themselves from any members involved by naming them.
The national soccer boss, Vlatko Markovic, who labeled the act as "scandalous and despicable," said it was inevitable that FIFA and UEFA would punish the federation with a severe financial penalty. He added that the incident was also a serious blow to the country's bid to host the 2010 European Championship.
