Conquered Reich - No legal existence - What surrender means. London May 8th 1945 "The German Reich ceases its legal existence at midnight tonight and its government will become a subjugated, conquered and occupied country without further independent existence. All German leaders are now in the same category as war prisoners. All German property, possessions or credit in foreign countries are automatically transferred to the account of the central allied control commission which begins to function immediately. There is no armistice as in 1918, for which reason from midnight the whole of the German manpower and military and private property is at the disposal of the allies. LIKE MANY other Palestinian refugees, Maryam Amarneh, 70, still holds the key to her home in the Ras Abu Ammar village west of Jerusalem, perhaps in the hope of one day returning.
