Holocaust frenzie on 27 January 2005

The continuous hammering into the public’s consciousness of the ‘Holocaust’ reached a frenzy during the 27 January 2005 60^th Anniversary celebration of the ‘Liberation’ of Auschwitz. The purpose of such saturation coverage is supposed to deflect from the saturation bombing of German cities at the end of World War II, thereby blotting out the other side of the war equation, to which Werner Fischer, Adelaide, alludes to in his unpublished letter to the local Sunday Mail newspaper:

Dear Sir – Your article on Dresden ‘Rising from the ashes’, by Paul Pottinger, SM, 6 February 2005, was excellent, and it reminded me that one of the best accounts written is found in Alexander McKee’s book, Dresden, The Devil’s Tinderbox, published by Granada. One passage in the book moved me:

“…Dead, Dead, Dead everywhere, some completely black like charcoal. Others completely untouched, lying as if they were asleep. Women in aprons, women with children sitting in the trams as if they had just nodded off. Allied air raids on Dresden turned an undefended city crammed with refugees into a blazing holocaust which because the funeral pyre of tens of thousands of men, women and children – perhaps of hundreds of thousands. No one will ever know. Dresden was of little strategic importance. Its few military targets were ignited by the bombers. The aim was to destroy the city to create an unstoppable firestorm. The target was the civilian population.”

In view of the 60^th anniversary of this tragic event today, 13 February, I would very much be obliged if you could find some space for my letter in your newspaper. Early in April 1945 I was transported by the army from Berlin to join our fighting units in Austria, and we saw Dresden in the far distance. Although it was some kilometers away, there was an eerie feeling that something very dreadful was happening. This feeling was there despite my having experienced many bombing raises in Berlin, including some that involved 1000 bombers. A kind of ‘Silent Spring’ atmosphere lay over the whole landscape. ‘Air Raid on Dresden Killed More Than 300,000, by Dan Regan, Stars and Stripes Staff Writer, Stars and Stripes, London Ed., May 5, 1945. Vol. 5 No. 156

With the 1st Army, May 3 (Delayed)-The Allied air raid on Dresden on Feb. 13-14 killed 300,000 persons, according to a report by Dresden police to a group of 600-British and French prisoners who were given passes by the Germans to enter the American lines. Nine British PWs were working in Dresden during the raid and said the horror and devastation caused by the Anglo-American 14-hour raid was beyond human comprehension unless one could see for himself. One British sergeant said, "Reports from Dresden police that 300,000 died as a result of the bombing didn't include deaths among 1,000,000 evacuees from the Breslau area trying to escape from the Russians. There were no records on them. After seeing the results of the bombing, I believe these figures are correct. They had to pitchfork shriveled bodies onto trucks and wagons and cart them to shallow graves on the outskirts of the city. But after two weeks if work the job became too much to cope with and they found other means to gather up the dead. They burned bodies in a great heap in the center of the city, but the most effective way, for sanitary reasons, was to take flamethrowers and burn the dead as they lay in the ruins. They would just turn the flamethrowers into the houses, burn the dead and then close off the entire area. The whole city is flattened. They were unable to clean up the dead lying beside roads for several weeks," the sergeant added.’

Germans who want to be Germans

That Germany is still an occupied country after all these decades will be tested on 8 May this year because somewhere in some war rules it states that occupation must cease after 60 years. In Germany it is Horst Mahler who has attempted to lay the legal foundation for a liberation struggle, and the NPD is attempting to generate enough enthusiasm so that freedom fighters will emerge who are willing to take their fight for freedom into the political arena, using the ballot box as their weapon of choice. Already the NPD’s success in the Saxon state parliament has the ruling political elite worried to the point where it wishes to use legal – quite undemocratic – means to silence the 12 parliamentarians who refuse to forget Dresden’s 13^th February tragedy six decades ago. Instead, there is the cow-towing to the Auschwitz story – which is then not even truthfully told but rather ideologically twisted to generate hatred against anything German, thereby enslaving the German mind to a foreign ideology. All this Horst Mahler addresses so splendidly in his writings and court cases – naturally simply ignored by Berlin judge Peter Faust who sits in judgment of Mahler. Faust just dismisses Mahler’s Weltanschauung/world-view, thereby also offending against the legal principle of ‘Offenkundigkeit’, the ‘public knowledge’ aspect of the so-called ‘Holocaust’, where the Auschwitz death figure has been reduced from 4 million to 1-1.5 million, and now by Fritjof Meier to below 500,000.

‘Drinking your own bathwater’

This massive legal attempt to resist compelling arguments propelled by the truth principle will in time fail, as it always does. But meanwhile Revisionists such as Ernst Zündel and René Berclaz, among others, will continue to languish in prison. Interestingly, the Hitler WMD story – the alleged homicidal gas chambers – has continued to exist for a long time, while the Anglo-American-Zionist-created Saddam Hussein WMD story didn’t last even a year. On 14 February 2005 on ABC TV’s 4 Corners, it was refreshing to have Rod Barton, a former Australian weapons inspector tell all about the fraudulent claims that served as pretext for Iraq to be invaded in March 2003. Australia’s defence and foreign ministers, not to mention the prime minister, were shown to be lying in Parliament as the scene was set to develop the pretext for the invasion of Iraq. Dr David Kay’s ‘sexing up’ of the report hurt Barton’s sense of truthfulness and objectivity, two moral and intellectual values he would not abandon. The matter of torture, likewise, was brushed aside semantically by the parliamentarians and their bureaucratic henchmen: Rod Barton, it was claimed, is just a weapons inspector who would not know the difference between an ‘interview’ and an ‘interrogation’. Barton claims the whole process was dishonest because persons from London and Washington demanded the writers of the report put in some ‘nuggets’ on eight to nine issues that would skew its contents. Two days later, on 17 February, 2005, former Survey Group head, David Kay, on ABC TV’s 7.30 Report, supporting Rod Barton’s comments, claimed there is no difference between an interview and interrogation –‘you’re not playing bridge’ in this business, certainly not at Camp Cropper, where high value detainees – senior people from Iraq – are held to this day.

A false dichotomy

All this activity serves to reveal what we already knew about the fraudulent WMD argument, for example, on 5 February 2003, on the day Ernst Zündel was arrested at his home, I was at Bradley Smith’s house in Mexico. We watched in disbelief as Colin Powell attempted to sell the story by holding a vial in his hand and showing a slide of a truck that was supposed to have been a mobile gas van. Bradley and I just laughed because the argument uses the same pattern that the ‘Holocaust’ industry uses: you begin with a factual statement, then you add to it an abstraction, then you distort the story and begin to fabricate, and finally you lie outright, making it so outrageous that the listener is awe-struck. It helps to create absolute fear and revulsion, as the 1991 attack on Iraq was justified – by a crying Kuwaiti girl claiming before the United Nations that Saddam Hussein’s soldiers were ripping babies from their humidity-cribs in hospitals. All a big lie, and thanks to the Internet, such cumulative lying will be exposed – in time.

The immediate fall-out of all this effort to save the doomed state of Israel will create more tragedy and bloodshed for those who oppose the Anglo-American-Zionist forces. It comes with the territory – but it will not last.

In Australia we had on 8 February 2005, for the first time in my memory, a most unusual court case happening in Perth, Western Australia. The newspaper report from The West Australian, of 9 February 2005, gives us an indication where we are heading to:

Racism conspirator sentenced in secret

“Australian Nationalist Movement member Daniel Tyrone Klavins was sentenced on conspiracy charges in a closed hearing yesterday. Klavins, 26, was due before Chief District Court Judge Antoinette Kennedy at 10am – but the case was brought forward by an hour and the court doors were locked. Three security guards stood outside the courtroom. It is likely that the application was made for security reasons. When a reporter from The West Australian arrived at the court at 9.02am, a “court closed” sign was taped to the door. Although the court order affects media organisations, no attempt was made to inform the media or give media lawyers an opportunity to challenge the order. The West Australian is unable to report the sentence imposed on Klavins but the newspaper’s lawyer has asked Chief Judge Kennedy to release her reasons for closing the court and the sentence given to a man whose crimes received considerable publicity – until yesterday. Last August, Klavins was jailed for 10 months for orchestrating attacks on metropolitan religious and ethnic landmarks. Klavins and two co-accused admitted multiple charges of spray-painting racial slogans on buildings, homes, bus shelters and restaurants. They also targeted a synagogue and food centre. The court was told they acted under orders of senior ANM members. The West Australian successfully fought a bid by police to close the court to the public on that occasion. Police claimed the matter was still operational but the magistrate ruled the publicity was warranted. Then, in Vocember last year, Klavins pleaded guilty to four counts of conspiring with others to firebomb Chinese restaurants. He had “rolled over” and will be a key witness against his alleged co-conspirators – ANM leader Jack van Tongeren, ANM deputy John Van Blitterswyk and member Matthew Peter Billing. Klavins was remanded to be sentenced in the District Court yesterday. By 9.30am it was over, the doors were unlocked and Judge Kennedy continued with her list of cases for the day – minus Klavins.”

As the newspaper article was sent to me without date – that fateful error of which I was cured by Dr Robert Faurisson! – I checked with the paper on which day the article appeared. I was advised that it was on 9 February, but that the article was not relevant anymore and I was not permitted to use it because things had developed. What’s this? Me no understand English no more! My calls placed with the editorial staff were not returned.

Regulation 18B coming up

This is all reminiscent of war-time measures, for example, as were implemented in 1940 by the United Kingdom with its REGULATION 18B, which is still on the Statute Books and can thus be re-activated at any time.

Before the outbreak of World War Two, there was a groundswell of German support in the United Kingdom, something the war-mongering Churchill, et al, needed to stifle. After all, Hitler was the first European politician and his SS was the forerunner of NATO, a multi-national fighting force. It must bother those individuals who are selling NATO and European unity to realize that they are, in fact, a mere Johnny-come-lately upon the political world stage. For these types it is embarrassing to recall that British aristocracy supported the nationalist movement. Sir Oswald Mosley is a prime example of a ‘brilliant parliamentarian’ (Beatrice Webb), who had distinguished himself as an 18-year-old volunteer for the Royal Flying Corps, one of the first 60 British airmen to fight. When he married Cynthia Curzon, the wedding was held in the Royal Chapel in Westminster Abbey, attended by King George and Queen Mary, among others. However, this did not protect him, and on 23 May 1940, without notice, together with 80 of his chief staff officers, he was arrested, without charge, without trial, under Regulation 18B. A good cross-section of British society was imprisoned, from bakers to Admirals, together with Austrians, Germans, Italians, and anti-war activists. In the US it was Roosevelt who arrested 120,000 US-Japanese, together with Germans and Italians and held them in desert concentration camps, much like Australia is currently doing with its illegal refugees!

More specualtions and food for thought from Dr Robert John, New York: Dresden bombing/Firestorm/Würzburg/

Firestorm bombing, if my memory is sufficient, I believe I heard Professor Freeman Dyson say on television how sorry he was to have devised the system of firestorm bombing as a "backroom boy" in World War II. Apart from the means already mentioned, there was the system of timing -- as you probably know, for a new wave of bombers to come in when fire brigades and ambulances had come to the rescue. Würzburg/ everyone has heard about Dresden. But when I was in Würzburg a few years ago, I was told that this non- industrial baroque town was bombed three weeks before the end of World War II. Sir Kenneth Clarke, in his series on Civilization -- called this barbarism. I was reminded of this during the Anglo-American war against Yugoslavia, when they ran out of military/industrial targets etc. I remember seeing on television the American officer, a colonel I believe, beside his tank that had just come in to Baghdad. Behind him people were looting the museum. He said these people have been under oppression so long, they should be able to do as they please for a while. SH said - the new Mongols are coming.

The culture of aristocratic good manners of the 18th-century included peace and war. Louis XVI of France was reluctant to help American colonials revolt against his “cousin” George III. When Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, he was treated with respect, and was seated at the same table with Lafayette as guests of Frederick the Great after viewing maneuvers of the Prussian army. At the great cannonade at Valmy, the Duke of Brunswick stopped the engagement saying, , “Hier schlagen wir nicht”—”We will not beat them here,” and broke off the engagement. Napoleon, after his escape and second defeat, was exiled, and France deliberately comparatively well treated to avoid a war of reprisal. The American Republic’s treatment of indigenous peoples and Civil War commenced the modern era; with General Sherman's burning of Atlanta after its surrender, and “scorched-earth” from there to the sea. In World War I the USA participated in a food blockade of Germany that continued for six months after the armistice. General Pershing wanted complete surrender. Neglect of cultural diplomacy led to World War II, and “total war.” Total war, that includes war on civilians, was continued after the Gulf War with starvation of the population in Iraq for 12 years, and then conquest by “Shock and Awe,” and more “terrorism.” Can cognitive therapy with a culture of critique be an answer to terrorism?

Erich Priebke speaks on the background to his unlawful imprisonment in Rome.

DS: Mr Priebke, wherefrom do you get your moral strength, unbroken and entering your 11th year of deprivation of liberty?

Priebke: I feel myself innocent of the charges laid against me because I considered the commanded retaliation to be legal – a severe war measure that all leading war powers during war have executed. Knowing that I am innocent gives me strength.

DS: The impetus to your persecution was to have come from a teacher. Who was he? Is that so?

Priebke: Yes, that’s true. It was the secondary teacher Fritz Küper, whom I employed for our German-Argentinian School, and – contrary to our practice – I terminated his two-year contract. In anger to that and upon his return to Germany he defamed me and the whole school administration. His letter to Beate Klarsfeld is reproduced in full in our book.*

DS: The successive trials were initiated against you until the desired result was obtained. How do those three judgments differentiate themselves in their verdicts?

Priebke: The first trial lasted three months with 25 hearing days. Here the state counsel for the prosecution and the 20 lawyers acting on behalf of the co-plaintiff had ample opportunity to interrogate me, and especially to accuse me of the most diverse offenses, without offering any evidence whatsoever. They defamed and insulted me and a clique of useful idiots was always present to applaud them. On 1 August 1996 in the name of the Italian people three judges declared me a free man. At once the Jewish co-plaintiffs organized a massive protest action for many hours until the Italian Justice Minister, not having anything better to do, had me re-arrested. The following trials were conducted under the pressure of my persecutors – Justicia had left the courtroom and was replaced by Vengeance.

DS: Were you not a few years after the war ended – just like your earlier comrades at the branch office Rome of the same, lower or higher rank, and the same charge – acquitted by an Italian military tribunal? Didn’t the officer who led the shooting of the hostages in the Adriatic caves later resume his police duties and retire as a criminal investigation commissioner?

Priebke: Yes, in the trial against our commander Kappler, my five co-accused were acquitted of all charges, because they had to obey orders from above, and they held the revenge acts as legal. All accused of the Commando Rome were acquitted because we all had to follow the same orders. It is also true that the former officer appointed by Kappler returned after the war to his duties.

DS: As an ex-Hauptsturmführer, i.e. a former captain who received orders in the second last row you quasi advanced to the Führer's substitute. How do you feel about that?

Priebke: You may perhaps know that here in Italy the judgment against me is hotly disputed. Often I am named as the “scapegoat” for what crimes the Germans are to have committed as chosen by my persecutors. They invented, organized and orchestrated the Case Priebke. As I soon as I recognized this I was determined not to let them get the better of me.

DS: If one recalls how they rage against you, then one recalls the dark Middle Ages – while the pronouncements of the powers-that-be in the third millennium drip of humanity, freedoms and Orwellian new-speak. Do you also see it like that?

Priebke: Yes, and I am sad that here in Rome, the centre of Catholic Christianity, in my case “la misericordia”, Christian mercy does not exist anymore.

DS: In the middle of the year you will be 92 years old. Your persecutors long ago had hoped for “the termination of the case Priebke” through the “biological final solution”. What are you doing to reach 100 years of age?

Priebke: For many years my wife and I lived according to the rules, which we thought were best for our health. When on 20 November 1995 I was forcefully separated from my beloved Alice, she was just as healthy as I was, but the separation hit her hard so that she suffered a shock that robbed her of her memory. When she recently died she did not have any physical frailties. She died of despair on account of our separation at our advanced age and our family tragedy. I keep fit as best I can.

DS: You are still a German citizen. The federal Republic of Germany owes you a duty of care. What have the highest holders of office and their deputies done to get you released or to be amnestied?

Priebke: I have written this in many letters to my friends: Neither Kohl-Herzog nor Schröder-Rau lifted a finger for an old German citizen who without blame finds himself in distress in a foreign country.

DS: A few months ago your wife died in Argentina with whom you were married for 65 years. You did not see her again. Can you comment on that?

Priebke: It was my greatest wish once again to embrace my loyal partner for life. This wish was not to be fulfilled. Anyone can obviously imagine what I think about this and about my persecutors.

DS: Your first defence counsel, Avvocato Velio Di Rezze characterized you in one sentence: “E’ Signore – he is a gentleman”. You call your co-author Dr Giachini your “guardian angel” – in a sentence or two can you describe him using a profane concept, similarly to how your lawyer portrayed you?

Priebke: Many people say there are no coincidences, and everything has its reason. When Dr Giachini first tried to visit me in the military prison at Forte Boccea, I had already refused many applications for visits. I didn’t wish to see any of these people, who out of curiosity or for other personal reasons wished to see this “Ex-Nazi”. Not so Dr Giachini – he wrote out of “humanitarian grounds”, something I appreciated and that made me curious. In this way I found my guardian angel and my life saver – my faithful friend Paolo. What he has done and is doing for me cannot be conveyed in a few words.

DS: You live in the capital city of Christianity; the highest representative of this religion of charity and forgiveness, Pope John Paul II, is also the Bishop of Rome, that means he is also your Bishop because you are a Catholic. It appears he has never interceded on your behalf. Did anyone during Christmas offer to light up your dark imprisonment?

Priebke: In 1997 together with a priest friend of mine I wrote a letter to Pope John Paul II, and the friend also wrote a letter. Though we knew that both letters arrived safely, we never received a reply. Christmas cheer and happiness arrives in the form of the hundreds of letters and greeting cards that I receive from my many friends all over the world, but especially from Austria and Germany, and those many letters from my Italian sisters and brothers nearby.

Holocaust theft case settled

Holocaust survivors have settled a lawsuit against the United States Government that alleged the US troops in World War II looted a train of gold, silver, art, and other valuables that nazis seized from Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust. The writ, filed in Florida in 2001, sought up to $US10,000 ($A13,000) each for up to 30,000 plaintiffs. The settlement details were not given.

Andreas Röhler, publisher of Sleipnir, has been resisting the Berlin authorities for many years. As a former East German, his dialectically-trained mind is sharper than that of the state prosecutors' and judges who wish to silence him. As in the Horst Mahler case, a frustrated public prosecutor attepted to silence Röhler by having him certified - without success.

Use of such Soviet-style psychiatric tricks is still not yet accepted as a matter of course, but one may surmise that it is only a matter of time before judicial personnel in power will use psychiatry to stifle intellectual dissent in Germany.

[The USA is not far behind such moves either because the US government has hired former STASI-boss Marcus Wolf and KGB-boss General Yevgeni Primakov to work for Homeland Security - check reference on this]

A questionable financial-tax complaint has now been levelled against Röhler. This trick was also recently used by the German authorities against Germar Rudolf, which lead to Rudolf incurring a massive financial debt.

To the rescue

West Australian, 22 January 2005

Staff at the French newspaper Liberation, a beacon for left-wingers and intellectuals, yesterday voted in favour of a bid from a member of the Rothschild banking dynasty to become its main shareholder. The staff accepted the offer from Edouard de Rothschild, 47, to inject $34 million into the ailing paper.

Criticism of Israel not anti-Jewish

I refer to “War of words over museum display” (The Advertiser, yesterday). There is nothing more predictable than indignant outrage from the Jewish lobby whenever there is even the mildest criticism of Israel and/or equally mild support for Palestine.

We can see the impact of this in the report of the reaction of our Attorney-General, who opened the exhibition at the South Australian Museum, which has so upset Norman Schueler.

Even though he was happy to open the exhibition, Michael Atkinson prefers to say nothing in response to this criticism.

When discussing the continuing conflict in the Middle East, we are forever having to make the same fine distinctions in relation to israel which we have had to make in relation to Northern Ireland.

I am opposed to the use of terror tactics, especially against innocent civilians, to pursue a nationalist cause, whether in Ireland or in Palestine and Israel.

I also wish to draw a distinction between being critical of Israel, which I am and being anti-Jewish, which I most definitely am not.

Just as the division of Ireland was fundamentally wrong, so was the imposition of the state of Israel within the sovereign state of Palestine.

While the latter clearly cannot now be undone, much more needs to be done to restore sovereignty over Palestine to the legitimate Palestinian government, and we should be free to be able to express these opinions without the fear of being subject to abuse.

Has the South Australian Museum become an outlet for Palestinian propaganda?

So it would seem. Seduced by a most attractive poster into the museum’s exhibition on “Palestiniam treasures”, the unwary visitors is instead subjected to an outrageous barrage of myths and political fiction.

These are cultural “treasures”? The so-called cultural exhibit comes from Canberra, sent to us by the Palestinian “ambassador”, the very same gentleman who would have us believe that Yasser Arafat was poisoned by Israel. Among the myths perpetrated by this purported “cultural”exhibit: that Palestinians were forced out of their land in 1948 (why did so many, then, in fact hundreds of thousands, choose to remain in Israel and become full citizens, with parliamentary representation?), that Israel launched not only the Six-Day War but the 1948 war as well (those of us who lived through the events know full well the mendacity of these charges) and that the land of Israel was brimming with Palestinian Arabs before Zionism began.

In fact, the population of the entire country at the end of the 19th century was less than half the population of present-day Adelaide. Inf act, most so-called Palestinians immigrated to the Holy Land only in the past century, attracted there from other Arab lands by economic opportunity.

While much of the world suffered under the burden of the Great Depression, for example, Palestine was booming because of the boudnless energy of a flood of new immigrants – Jews and Arabs.

Before Zionism, Palestine was but a forsaken province of a crumbling Ottoman Empire.

Mr Kopstein fails to pay tribute to the actual builders of Israel – the many Templers, those Swabians who during the 1850s settled in the Promised Land, thereby being closer to the Kingdom of God. It was these Germans who built up Palestine as a civilized entity that could feed itself and offer an infrastructure on which the immigrants built their Israel. The Templers, of course, were also thrown out of the new Israel after 1948.

Dear Sir – When Albert Einstein made his famous discovery 100 years ago, he is quoted as having said to colleagues: “Could you verify my calculations, I think I am going insane.”

I am having a similar problem with the forever repeated allegation that we Germans killed six million Jews. By chance I found in the South Australian State Library figures published in 1930 by the Yiddish Scientific Institute, Vilna, Lithuania: World Jewry = 15,800,000; European Jewry = 7,306,541.

Germany’s renowned Der Spiegel reported in No. 33/1977 that between the two world wars – 1918 and 1939 – over one million Jews from East and Middle Europe were helped by the Hebrew Immigration Aid Society to migrate to North and South America. According to my brief calculations that would leave just on six million Jews in Europe – including Britain and stretches to the Ural Mountains in the East.

With six million allegedly killed by the Germans and a reported 340,000 Holocaust survivors going to Israel after the war, there should be no Jews left in Europe. Yet from various newspapers I learn that there are about 3 million alone in the former USSR according to the booklet Jews in the Soviet Union, by Solomon Rabinovich, 1966. In France 800,000 alone, 500,000 in England.

Unlike Prof A Einstein, I have nobody to call upon for help, so I hope that some of your readers can come up with a solution of this mysterious puzzle, for sanity’s sake.

Subject: Ground-breaking admission

While asking why the railway tracks leading to Auschwitz weren't bombed, a Holocaust journalist has made the ground-breaking admission that "The United States and Britain garnered much intelligence about (Auschwitz) during the war", supporting Air Photo Evidence's stance that wire fences and no outside perimeter fence meant villagers and spies knew every day-to-day occurrence in Birkenau, and air photos were used by the Allies to verify the spy reports. So if the Allies had "much intelligence" about Birkenau in 1944, why weren't the rail lines or Birkenau bombed? Now 60 years later the explosive question has to be answered!

Waitress forced to choose between brothel and dole cut, Telegraph, February 5, 2005

Berlin: A 25-year-old waitress who turned down a job providing sexual services at a Berlin brothel faces cuts to her unemployment benefits. Prostitution was legalised in Germany just over two eyars ago and brothel owners were granted access to official databases of jobseekers. Under welfare reforms, any woman under 55 who has been out of work for more than a year can be forced to take an available job, including in the sex industry, or lose her unemployment benefit.

The scientist who created Dolly the sheep, the world's first cloned mammal, has been granted a licence to clone human embryos for medical research. Professor Ian Wilmut, of the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, plans to obtain stem cells for research into Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a procedure that divides the medical world along ethical lines. Britain's cloning watchdog, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), granted the licence to Prof Wilmut, Dr Paul de Sousa from Edinburgh and Professor Christopher Shaw from King's College London. It is only the second such licence granted in Britain.

"Our aim will be to generate stem cells purely for research purposes," Prof Wilmut said in a statement. "This is not reproductive cloning in any way." Human reproductive cloning is illegal in Britain but therapeutic cloning, creating embryos as a source of stem cells to cure diseases, is allowed on an approved basis. Stem cells are the body's master cells. Those from days-old embryos have the ability to form any kind of tissue and scientists are working to learn how to manipulate them for transplants to treat diseases ranging from diabetes to cancer and MND.

The practice has divided the medical world. Opponents argue the use of a human embryo for medical research or even treatment is unethical. US President George W Bush says he plans to press for even stricter limits on human embryo research. But the British group said the stem cell technique would greatly enhance their understanding of MND and accelerate the discovery of new drugs. "We have spent 20 years looking for genes that cause MND and to date we have come up with just one gene," Professor Shaw said.

"This is potentially a big step forward," Dr Wilmut and his colleagues plan to use the same technique that was successful in creating Dolly in 1996. They will extract genetic material from a skin or blood cell of patients suffering from an inherited form of the illness and place it in an egg whose nucleus has been removed. The egg will be stimulated to develop into an embryo and allowed to develop for about six days, when the stem cells will be extracted. The scientists will compare the stem cells with both healthy and diseased cells from patients to better understand the illness and to test potential medicines. MND affects nerve cells that carry instructions from the brain to the muscles. It weakens muscles and causes paralysis but the patient's brain is not affected. Last August, a team of scientists from Newcastle University in northern England was granted a licence to clone human embryos to develop new treatments for diabetes and degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. –Reuter.

Holocaust Denier Causes Protest

A loud war of words occurred between Holocaust deniers and Jewish activists outside the Canadian consulate in downtown Los Angeles at a Feb. 4 protest supporting German Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel.

Zundel was jailed in Canada in 2003 for violating immigration violations. He is now facing deportation to Germany because Canada considers him and his Holocaust denial views a threat to Canadian security.

About 30 police divided a side street near the city’s main library branch, between two dozen Zundel supporters and three dozen supporters of Israel, including Jewish Defense League activists and high school students. Zundel supporters waved “Shame on Canada” signs, and their opponents waved American and Israeli flags. Canada’s Customs Censors Ban Zündel’s Prison Memoirs as “Hate”

Dear Free Speech Supporter: Returning from the U.S. on October 11, I was sent to secondary inspection for my usual bout with Canada's thought police, the Customs censors. As usual, after pawing through my clippings, poring over my reading bag of Canadian newspapers, a rooting through my underwear and laundry, they hit upon their real target -- some books and pamphlets. They seized a number. I call it stole: they were mine, not theirs; they had them, I didn't. They call it "detaining" the literature.

In a notice dated November 8, unsigned, of course, by the cowardly censors I was informed that Ernst Zündel's Setting the Record Straight: Letters from Cell #7 had been seized and ruled as "hate propaganda." I've filed the appeal which appears below. If I lose, these books shall be consigned to the fire by Canada's modern day book burners.

For a year and a half, I've been sent to secondary inspection -- special treatment harassment almost very time I've flown back to Canada. It's a price I reluctantly pay for being an outspoken supporter of free speech and Ernst Zündel's freedom. In Absurdistan, it's risky to stand for freedom.

Israel is embarking upon a more aggressive approach to the war on terror that will include staging targeted killings in the United States and other friendly countries, former Israeli intelligence officials told United Press International.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has forbidden the practice until now, these sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Israeli statements were confirmed by more than a half dozen former and currently serving U.S. foreignpolicy and intelligence officials in interviews with United Press International. But an official at the Israeli Embassy in Washington told UPI: "That is rubbish. It is completely untrue.

Israel and the United States have such a close and co-operative intelligence relationship, especially in the field of counter-terrorism, that the assertion is ludicrous."

With the appointment of Meir Dagan, the new director of Israel's Mossad secret intelligence service, Sharon is preparing "a huge budget" increase for the spy agency as part of "a tougher stance in fighting global jihad (or holy war)," one Israeli official said.

Since Sharon became Israeli prime minister, Tel Aviv has mainly limited its practice of targeted killings to the West Bank and Gaza because "no one wanted such operations on their territory," a former Israeli intelligence official said.

Another former Israeli government official said that under Sharon, "diplomatic constraints have prevented the Mossad from carrying out 'preventive operations' (targeted killings) on the soil of friendly countries until now."

He said Sharon is "reversing that policy, even if it risks complications to Israel's bilateral relations."

A former Israeli military intelligence source agreed: "What Sharon wants is a much more extensive and tough approach to global terrorism, and this includes greater operational maneuverability."

Does this mean assassinations on the soil of allies? "It does," he said.

"Mossad is definitely being beefed up," a U.S. government official said of the Israeli agency's budget increase. He declined to comment on the Tel Aviv's geographic expansion of targeted killings.

An FBI spokesman also declined to comment, saying: "This is a policy matter. We only enforce federal laws."

A congressional staff member with deep knowledge of intelligence matters said, "I don't know on what basis we would be able to protest Israel's actions." He referred to the recent killing of Qaed Salim Sinan al Harethi, a top al Qaida leader, in Yemen by a remotely controlled CIA drone.

"That was done on the soil of a friendly ally," the staffer said.

But the complications posed by Israel's new policy are real.

"Israel does not have a good record at doing this sort of thing," said former CIA counter-terrorism official Larry Johnson.

He cited the 1997 fiasco where two Mossad agents were captured after they tried to assassinate Khaled Mashaal, a Hamas political leader, by injecting him with poison.

According to Johnson, the attempt, made in Amman, Jordan, caused a political crisis in Israeli-Jordan relations. In addition, because the Israeli agents carried Canadian passports, Canada withdrew its ambassador in protest, he said. Jordan is one of two Arab nations to recognize Israel. The other is Egypt.

At the time, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said, "I have no intention of stopping the activities of this government against terror," according to a CNN report.

Former CIA officials say Israel was forced to free jailed Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmad Yassin and 70 other Jordanian and Palestinian prisoner being held in Israeli jails to secure the release of the two would-be Mossad assassins.

Phil Stoddard, former director of the Middle East Institute, cited a botched plot to kill Ali Hassan Salemeh, the mastermind of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre. The 1974 attempt severely embarrassed Mossad when the Israeli hit team mistakenly assassinated a Moroccan waiter in Lillehammer, Norway.

Salemeh, later a CIA asset, was killed in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1976 by a car bomb placed by an Israeli assassination team, former U.S. intelligence officials said.

"Israel knew Salemeh was providing us with preventive intelligence on the Palestinians and his being killed pissed off a lot of people," said a former senior CIA official.

But some Israeli operations have been successful.

Gerald Bull, an Ontario-born U.S. citizen and designer of the Iraqi supergun -- a massive artillery system capable of launching satellites into orbit, and of delivering nuclear chemical or biological payloads from Baghdad to Israel -- was killed in Belgium in March 1990. The killing is still unsolved, but former CIA officials said a Mossad hit team is the most likely suspect.

Bull worked on the supergun design -- codenamed Project Babylon -- for 10 years, and helped the Iraqis develop many smaller artillery systems. He was found with five bullets in his head outside his Brussels apartment.

Israeli hit teams, which consist of units or squadrons of the Kidon, a sub-unit for Mossad's highly secret Metsada department, would stage the operations, former Israeli intelligence sources said. Kidon is a Hebrew word meaning "bayonet," one former Israeli intelligence source said.

This Israeli government source explained that in the past Israel has not staged targeted killings in friendly countries because "no one wanted such operations on their territory." This has become irrelevant, he said.

Dagan, the new hard-driving director of Mossad, will implement the new changes, former Israeli government officials said.

Dagan, nicknamed "the gun," was Sharon's adviser on counter-terrorism during the government of Netanyahu in 1996, former Israeli government officials say. A former military man, Dagan has also undertaken extremely sensitive diplomatic missions for several of Israel's prime ministers, former Israeli government sources said.

Former Israel Defense Forces Lt. Col. Gal Luft, who served under Dagan, described him as an "extremely creative individual -- creative to the point of recklessness."

A former CIA official who knows Dagan said the new Mossad director knows "his foreign affairs inside and out," and has a "real killer instinct." Dagan is also "an intelligence natural" who has "a superb analyst not afraid to act on gut instinct," the former CIA official said.

Dagan has already removed Mossad officials whom he regards as "being too conservative or too cautious" and is building up "a constituency of senior people of the same mentality," one former long-time Israeli operative said. Dagan is also urging that Mossad operatives rely less on secret sources and rely more on open information that is so plentifully provided on the Internet and newspapers.

"It's a cultural thing," one former Israeli intelligence operative explained. "Mossad in the past has put its emphasis on Humint (human intelligence) and secret operations and has neglected the whole field of open media, which has become extremely important."

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Four men and one woman, all around 90 years old, gather in a conference room and pour themselves coffee — rocket fuel for the last of the original rocketeers. Konrad Dannenberg hopes private industry will take tourists to space. Just outside, in Rocket Park, looms some of their handiwork: Gemini and Mercury capsules, a lunar lander and a giganticrusting Saturn V from the Apollo program. These five people were among 118 German rocket scientists bundled up and brought to the USA after World War II. Working for the Nazis, the rocket scientists had made Hitler's deadly V-2s. Reconstituted in Huntsville, the group vaulted U.S. rocket technology ahead by a decade and developed the rockets that allowed their adopted country to win the space race. The group's inspirational leader, Wernher von Braun, helped persuade President Kennedy to make his famous commitment to put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s. Ernst Stuhlinger was Werner von Braun's right-hand man.

Today, only 12 of that group are still living, including the five gathered here recently to help raise money to restore the Saturn V outside. Even as the remaining rocketeers fade away, they are suddenly relevant again to a new generation.

For almost 30 years after Apollo, the American public seemed indifferent to space. But now, technology entrepreneurs — members of a generation raised on Star Trek and Star Wars —are again making space sexy.

Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen funded SpaceShipOne, which this fall won the X Prize for boosting civilian space travel. Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos has started a private company that will work toward putting people on Mars. Elon Musk, who founded online bill-paying service PayPal, has started a space company. Mogul Richard Branson is aiming to be the first to put hotels in space.

To this new generation, the German rocketeers are an inspiration. For the rocketeers, the techies are reviving their dearest hope: that man will go to Mars.

"If private industry takes tourists into space, it might uplift the whole program again," says Konrad Dannenberg, 92, a propulsion expert on Apollo. "I'm very hopeful."

Ernst Stuhlinger, 92, who was von Braun's right-hand man, twinkles when asked about the new generation's dreams of Mars flights. "We old-timers have been thinking that way for a very long time."

Forced to make missiles

The rocketeers have long been haunted by their earlier lives.In the 1930s, Germany was a hotbed of research into the new idea of launching rockets into space. A young von Braun took the lead, launching his first rockets in 1934. As World War II approached, the Nazis created a rocket team under von Braun at a secret base on an island at Peenemunde, Germany. They were ordered to make military missiles, not spaceships.

The team developed the V-2, which killed 2,500 British civilians. The rockets were built by concentration camp labor in tunnels.

The rocketeers have always said they had no choice. They say they wanted to build rockets to go to the moon and Mars, not to carry explosives. "We couldn't even talk about space flight," Dannenberg says. "Von Braun was at a party and talked about it with some people, and the Nazis found out and put him in jail." He was later released, but the message was clear.

As Germany's defeat seemed certain in 1945, the rocketeers made a calculated move. "It was clear nothing was going to happen in Germany in space after the war," Dannenberg says. If the rocketeers wanted to pursue their dream, they would have to go elsewhere. The group decided they'd have their best shot with the Americans.

They hid their research papers in a mine shaft, forged travel documents, and as many as 500 people — scientists and their families — moved toward the approaching American Army — avoiding the Gestapo, who might have arrested or shot them. They holed up in an abandoned fortress in the Alps.

Von Braun sent his younger brother, Magnus, off on a bicycle to try to find the Americans. He stumbled across Pvt. Fred Schniekert of Sheboygan, Wis., and tried to explain that a whole team of rocket scientists wanted to surrender. Schniekert said, "I think you're nuts," but relayed the message to his superiors, who recognized the value of the rocketeers.

The Army raced to Peenemunde to get there before the Soviets. The rocketeers' papers and every project and spare V-2 part were loaded on 300 rail cars that were shipped to the USA. And then the U.S. government took its own calculated risk: It transferred the 118 former enemy rocket scientists and their families to Fort Bliss, Texas, and eventually to an abandoned military base in Huntsville.

Beating Russia to the moon

Over the next decade, the rocketeers didn't have much to do. "We called ourselves PoPs — prisoners of peace," Stuhlinger quips. John F. Kennedy was elected president in 1960 and soon after fell from grace with the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. A few years before, the USSR had beaten the USA to space with its Sputnik satellite.

"Kennedy wanted to do something to regain America's prestige," Stuhlinger recalls. Kennedy asked Vice President Lyndon Johnson to write letters seeking advice. One went to von Braun.

Stuhlinger has copies of memos that bounced between von Braun and the White House. Von Braun laid out everything he knew about the capabilities of U.S. and Soviet rockets. He concluded that the USA would have little chance of beating the Soviets to a manned space lab, but would have a "sporting chance" of beating them to an orbit of the moon and "an excellent chance" of beating them to a moon landing.

In other words, the USA didn't go to the moon because it was there. We went because we could get there first.

In a speech in May 1961 Kennedy laid out one of history's great mission statements: "This nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth."

It could not happen without the German rocketeers.

"The irony is that in the 1960s, we went from nothing to landing a person on the moon in eight years," says space entrepreneur Musk. "Today it would take two or three times as long, and that's crazy."

Astronaut Walter Schirra, 81, who flew three space missions, was one of the seven original Mercury astronauts when he heard about Kennedy's speech. "I couldn't believe we'd made that commitment," he recalls. "So many things happened so fast. I'd just flown Mach 2 for the first time in 1958." To get to the moon would require speeds of Mach

25, which would take engines 60 to 70 times more powerful. "That's a big leap."

The von Braun team numbered 400 in 1961. It quickly swelled to 8,000. But the Germans were the leaders, and von Braun was the star. "That was important," Stuhlinger says. "We had a von Braun. There is no von Braun today."

"If the Germans had not been here, the technology would've been delayed by 10 years, 15 years," says Mark Smith, who knows the Germans from his years as CEO of Adtran,a Huntsville tech company. "No group of people is indispensable, but they shrunk the time frame."

Rules about federal contracts and processes were tossed. "We could make decisions in almost no time," says Walter Haussermann, who led development of guidance controls. He remembers talking with IBM about supplying the mission's computers. He was able to say yes in two days. "Today, it would take years," he says.

Thanks to the Germans' experience, glitches rarely slowed the project. The only disaster: a fire in the Apollo 1 that killed the three-man crew. Manned flights were delayed for nearly two years to make sure it didn't happen again.

Ask the Germans how they accomplished so much so quickly, and they struggle for an answer. They note the commitment from Kennedy, the military and the American public — all pulling toward a single goal. Schirra, who often worked closely with the Germans, says the space race was like a years-long adrenaline rush. "It was a competition with Russia, and we had to beat them," he says.

Mostly, though, the Germans seem nonchalant, as if it were easy to put a man on the moon in eight years. "We all believed it could be done," Dannenberg says with a shrug.

New generation takes over

So now comes a new age. Interest in space dropped after the first moon landings. Travel to Mars seemed unlikely. Discouraged, the Germans dropped out of NASA. Von Braun died in 1977.But a young generation at NASA has put two robot rovers on Mars and wowed the public. President Bush has talked of Mars missions. Mostly, though, entrepreneurs have picked up where the rocketeers left off.

"We need to exceed where we were with the Apollo program," says Musk, whose company, SpaceX, plans its first orbital launch next year. "We have to go to Mars with people. A lot of people take for granted that that's the direction we're heading in, but unless there's a dramatic reduction in cost, there won't be anything like that. Somebody has to try to step in and try to save the day."

Musk made a fortune from PayPal, which he sold to eBay for $1.5 billion. He's pumping much of it into SpaceX. He also helped fund the X Prize.

The public might be ready for Apollo-like excitement again. SpaceShipOne is on the cover of Time as 2004's most amazing invention. The cover of the December issue of Wired proclaims "The New Age of Exploration." Bezos' secretive space start-up, Blue Origins, says on its Web site that it's "developing vehicles and technologies that, over time, will help enable an enduring human presence in space." To do so is the enduring last wish of the rocketeers.
