Robert Faurisson had been invited to lecture on Friday at the University of Teramo, in central Italy, by Claudio Moffa, a professor of Asian and African history and director of a master's program in Middle East studies, AP reported.

The university cited security fears surrounding the lecture in announcing the closure of its campus housing the law, political science and communications departments.

Moffa and Faurisson had to be escorted out of a cafe off campus where they were having a small news conference on Friday after a group of about 100 people protested in the street, Police in Teramo said.

Faurisson says that Nazi gas chambers are a fiction and that most of the Jews who were killed at the Auschwitz concentration camp died of natural causes.

Professor Moffa, who organised the lecture, was formally warned to cancel the invitation but insisted he had a right to academic independence.

"Are you so convinced of your truths?" Moffa was quoted as telling the Italian daily newspaper La Stampa. "Then why don't you come and pull him to pieces?"

"I think it is fair to allow a free debate and different interpretations of historical events," Moffa wrote on his Web site.

Last year, Faurisson took part in a conference in Iran, which gathered some of the most well-known US and European Holocaust deniers to debate whether the World War II genocide of Jews took place.

The response of a promoter of Holocaust lies to a Holocaust "denier" is easily seen by the non-participating bystander as insane behavior, which in a more familiar context, may be recognized by everyone but the maniac instigator, as crazy. In other situations, the authorities responsible for defusing maniacal outbursts, come and take away the maniac, in a straight jacket if required, to be confined until the maniacal phase is passed.

But if the mania is imposed under color of authority, as here at the university at Teramo, and publicized broadly to an ignorant, brainwashed public, it is more likely to be seen as righteous and legal suppression by the authorities, of vicious antisocial ideas.

That is a dramatic example of one of the superbly effective uses of an authoritarian social system, to make oppressive behavior appear to be righteous behavor, an example of what authoritarianism is, and always has been, for. An authoritarian system of social control and an ignorant, cowering public go hand in glove. It has always seemed odd to me that the Holocaust family of lies contnues to work so well. I may be finally waking up to the correct conclusion that there is no room for optimism that the public will finally come to its senses. That optimism I now see as perhaps the last stand of my early liberalism.

One man's "Holocaust Denial" is another man's protestation of innocence. Why should protestation of innocence be a crime?

If new evidence is sufficient to warrant it then there should always be scope for a retrial.

There should be no limit to anyone's right to protest the innocence of another person, no matter how many courts have found the accused guilty.

This is a far more basic and significant right than that of 'Holocaust' promoters to remain unchallenged.

ROME - An Italian university closed one of its campuses for the day Friday to prevent a planned lecture by a retired French professor who denies gas chambers were used in Nazi concentration camps.

Robert Faurisson, who has been convicted five times in France for denying crimes against humanity, had been expected to speak at a local hotel instead but that conference too was later canceled after scuffles with protesters.

"(There is) a climate of tension which could put in danger the safety of the students," the university said.

Police in Teramo said Moffa and Faurisson had to be escorted out of a cafe off campus where they were having a small news conference Friday after a group of about 100 people protested in the street, shouting insults at them.

Moffa was pushed by a protester, said police official Mimmo De Carolis. When reached by telephone, Moffa said the lecture had been canceled because of the attack, but gave no other details.

Faurisson has caused outrage in France, arguing for a decade against evidence that Nazi Germany systematically destroyed the Jews. He maintains that no gas chambers were used in Nazi concentration camps during World War II.

The university administration had issued an official warning to Moffa to cancel the invitation, arguing that Faurisson's qualifications were "absolutely inadequate and don't deserve academic legitimization."

Moffa had cited his right to teach freely in defending his invitation to Faurisson. "I want to specify that I am not a denier, but I think it is fair to allow a free debate and different interpretations of historical events," Moffa wrote on his Web site.

The Nazi-hunting Simon Wiesenthal Center had urged the university to cancel the event. "To welcome Faurisson is an embarrassment to Italian academia, offends the families of Italian martyrs who fell in fighting the scourge of fascism ... and encourages a perverse propaganda to incite a new generation to anti-Semitism and racist doctrine," the center said.

Last year, Faurisson took part in a conference in Iran, which gathered some of the most well-known U.S. and European Holocaust deniers to debate whether the World War II genocide of Jews took place.

The gathering touched off a firestorm of indignation across the world and particularly in Europe, where many countries have made it a crime to publicly disavow the Nazis' systematic extermination of 6 million Jews.

Should Holocaust deniers be prevented from airing their views? And, if so, how far is it right to go in stopping them? The questions arise because of what happened over here on Thursday night in the central Italian university city of Teramo.

Robert Faurisson, a retired academic who has been convicted five times in his native France for denying crimes against humanity, had been invited by a member of the staff to give a lecture. His host is one Claudio Moffa, a professor who run the university's master's programme in Middle Eastern studies.

Moffa was asked by the university authorities to think again. He refused. So the rector, Mauro Mattioli, decided the only thing left was to temporarily shut down the university, which he did.

He said his decision was forced on him by security considerations. In a statement, the university authorities spoke of a "climate of tension that could endanger the safety of students".

Indeed, when Faurisson tried earlier today to speak at a hotel, there were scuffles with protesters and the event was cancelled. However, it is also worth noting that the rector had been given a clear indication by Italy's centre-left government of what was expected of him.

In a letter quoted by La Repubblica, the higher education minister, Fabio Mussi, said "inviting to an Italian campus a figure ... who denies the gravity of the Shoah has no academic merit, but merely bears witness to a mediocre provocation".

For professor Moffa, on the other hand, it is a question of academic and intellectual freedom. His website vaunts a declaration of support for his initiative, signed by more than 20 other Italian academics.

The professor claims that he is not himself a Holocaust denier. But his most recent relevant posting to the site is entitled "Why Faurisson and the 'deniers' convince me more and more".

Picking up on the prison sentence given to David Irving and the various penalties inflicted on his guest, he poses the following question: "Why is ... judicial harassment that smacks of manic obsession necessary if the arguments of Faurisson and Co are indeed 'unfounded'?"

Ieri Il Tempo, raccogliendo la denuncia dell’Anti Defamation League sottolineava il fatto che a fronte di un «anti semitismo strisciante» in un ateneo italiano potesse prendere la parola come «storico» un professore che nega l’Olocausto. Ieri pomeriggio il preside della Facoltà di Scienze politiche dell’università di Teramo, Adolfo Pepe, ha riunito d'urgenza il Collegio di Presidenza, alla presenza del rettore dell'Ateneo teramano Mauro Mattioli per affrontare la questione.

Al termine della riunione il Rettore ha preso atto della denuncia forte e unanime del Collegio, secondo il quale «le competenze scientifiche di Faurisson appaiono del tutto inadeguate e assolutamente non meritevoli di alcuna legittimazione accademica. L'invito del professor Moffa a Robert Faurisson - ha aggiunto il Collegio - oltre a contraddire profondamente le tradizioni culturali e i valori di riferimento della Facoltà di Scienze politiche di Teramo, ha creato un gravissimo disagio ed un forte allarme nella comunità di Ateneo, compresi gli studenti, e nella più vasta opinione pubblica e scientifica nazionale e internazionale».

Per questi motivi il rettore Mauro Mattioli, anche alla luce della incongruenza della lezione di Faurisson con gli obiettivi formativi del Corso di laurea e delle forti preoccupazioni espresse dal Collegio per i possibili gravi problemi di ordine pubblico che la presenza di Faurisson potrebbe provocare, invierà al professor Claudio Moffa una formale ingiunzione perché si astenga dal far tenere a Robert Faurisson una lezione all'Università di Teramo.

Contro la conferenza del negazionista all’università di Terma c’era stato anche un appello firmato tra gli altri da ex deportati, dal presidente dell'Unione comunità ebraiche italiane, Renzo Gattegna e dal presidente della Comunità ebraica di Roma, Leone Paserman. Secondo i firmatari «le sedi universitarie devono essere spazi di libertà di pensiero», ma allo stesso tempo «la serietà, il rigore metodologico e scientifico devono rappresentare un elemento di discrimine irrinunciabile». «È grave - conclude l'appello - che tesi insostenibili e falsificatorie come quelle sostenute e diffuse da Faurisson, dimostratesi false e pretestuose nonchè contrarie ai risultati di decenni di ricerche condotte da storici specialisti di tutti i paesi, ottengano la legittimazione implicita nel fatto che vengano enunciate in un'aula universitaria».

Holocaust denier expelled from Warsaw book fair

WARSAW (Reuters) - Historian David Irving, a convicted holocaust denier, was escorted out of an international book fair in Warsaw where he was planning to display his books, Polish organisers said on Saturday. Irving, who was arrested in Austria after his arrival on a visit in November 2005, spent more than a year in an Austrian jail for denying the Nazis organised mass murder of six million Jews during World War Two. "We asked him to leave," said Grzegorz Guzowski, the book fair organiser. "Our employees helped him pack up his things, and our car drove him to the address he specified." He said Irving's publishers did not send materials detailing his work to the fair until a few hours before the deadline, giving organisers too little time to prevent the self-taught historian from setting up a table at the exhibition. Unlike many European countries, Polish law does not expressly forbid Holocaust denial, Warsaw University law professor Piotr Kruszynski told Reuters. "Polish laws prohibiting the promotion of fascism and defamation of people on racial and religious grounds could conceivably be extended to include Irving's writings," he added. Irving plans to remain in the country for a few more days to visit Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps in Poland. "It's ironic that it's come to a situation like this in Poland, which fought against restrictions on speech for such a long time," Irving was quoted by daily Zycie Warszawy as saying.
